New Citi Custom Cash credit card with 5x earnings

Citi has just introduced their new Custom Cash credit card, which has no annual fee credit card and gets you 5x ThankYou Points (TYP) on your top eligible spending category for each billing cycle.  You'll also get 20,000 TYP as a sign-up bonus after spending $750 in the first 3 months of card membership.  Let's take a look at the card.

5x earning categories

Instead of having quarterly rotating 5x categories like the Chase Freedom or Discover cards, the Citi Custom Cash simply earns 5x on your top spending category each pay period.  It's capped at $500 per billing cycle, which is essentially $500 per month.  Eligible categories include the following:
  • Drugstores
  • Fitness clubs
  • Gas stations
  • Grocery stores
  • Home improvement stores
  • Live entertainment
  • Restaurants
  • Select streaming services
  • Select transit
  • Select travel
This is a pretty solid list, and you'll likely be able to find a category to max out your monthly 5x on.  Your top spending category can also change from month-to-month.  For example, you could use your card exclusively at fitness centers this month and earn 5x, and then exclusively at restaurants next month and get 5x.  You'll also get 1x on all other purchases.

Citi ThankYou Points

Citi TYP are one of the more valuable credit card points currencies.  If you have the Citi Premier or Prestige cards, you can transfer TYP earned from the Custom Cash at a 1:1 ratio to Citi's 14 airline loyalty partners, which include Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer, Avianca LifeMiles, Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, Turkish Airlines Miles&Smiles, and more.  Without the Citi Premier or Prestige cards, TYP can typically be redeemed for statement credits or gift cards at a penny each.

Sign-up bonus

The Custom Cash card comes with a 20,000 TYP sign-up bonus after spending $750 within the first 3 months of card membership, which is an easy spending threshold for most to meet.  The bonus is available as long as you have not received a new cardmember bonus on the Citi Custom Cash Card in the past 48 months, which shouldn't include anyone since the card was just launched.

Bottom line

The Custom Cash card is a welcome addition to the Citi ecosystem of cards.  Citi has long lacked a no annual fee card that earns 5x on purchases, and this card does just that.  This is a great card to pair with your Citi Premier or Prestige cards, and most cardholders likely won't have a problem maxing out on their monthly 5x categories as the list is pretty solid.  Signing up for this no annual fee card is a no-brainer for Citi Premier and Prestige card holders.
