Targeted 125,000 point Amex Platinum offer

Amex has targeted various lucky individuals with their highest-ever 125,000 point sign-up offer for the Amex Platinum card after spending $5,000 within the first 3 months of card membership.  This is more than double the standard sign-up offer of 60k points!  The original 125k offer was first sent out to individuals in late January, and now it looks like a new round of people have been targeted.  To check if you're eligible for this offer, go to Amex's pre-qualified offers page.

The Amex Platinum carries a hefty $550 annual fee, but offsetting the fee has now become even more doable now that Amex has added a monthly $20 cell phone bill and online streaming credit through the end of the year.  This effectively comes out to an additional $160 in value (8 months x $20) assuming you have cell phone and online streaming bills to pay, which have become more common of late due to all the sheltering in place mandates with COVID-19.  Add that to the annual $200 airline fee reimbursement, $100 Saks Fifth Avenue credit, and the $200 Uber credit, then you could come out $110 on top despite the $550 annual fee, which is not waived for the first year.

The Amex Platinum also comes with the other notable benefits:
  • Access to the Amex Global Lounge Collection, which includes Centurion, Airspace, Escape, Plaza Premium, Delta SkyClub, and Priority Pass lounges worldwide
  • Up to $100 fee credit for Global Entry or TSA Precheck
  • Automatic Marriott Bonvoy and Hilton Honors Gold elite status
  • Access to the Fine Hotels and Resorts collection
  • 5x MR on airline tickets purchased directly from the airline
  • No foreign exchange transaction fees
  • Amex Global Assist Hotline, which covers eligible emergency medical transport costs during your trip
Access the Amex Global Lounge Collection including the SFO Centurion Lounge

Many of the travel benefits probably won't be useful for many during this time as the travel industry has suffered tremendously due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with commercial flights ridership down by 93%.  This likely plays in to the recent credit additions and increased sign-up offer for this card as Amex struggles to find new applicants.

Redeem 95k Amex MR for roundtrip business class on Eva Airlines from North America to Taiwan

Bottom line

This is a great 125k sign-up offer if you've been targeted.  Amex Membership Rewards are among the most valuable points currencies out there, enabling you to book roundtrip business class trips to Asia for as little as 95k points.  Although most of probably won't be flying or traveling any time soon, the added monetary credits will definitely be useful in completely offsetting the annual fee.
