Ends today: Alaska Air 50% off sale, stack with 10% off Chase Offer or Costco

As part of their safety video that was aired as a Super Bowl commercial yesterday, Alaska Airlines has been offering 50% or BOGO (buy one, get one free) flights on most of their flights with promo code LETSGO.  The sale ends at midnight PST tonight, but is good for flights departing February 16 - May 26, 2021 for a minimum of 2 travelers and a maximum of 6 travelers.  Here is how the offer works:

  1. In the booking form on this page, enter your departure and arrival cities, dates, and at least 2 travelers.
    • Travel is valid February 16 - May 26, 2021.
    • Travel to Hawaii, Mexico, or Costa Rica is valid Sundays - Wednesdays
    • Travel from Hawaii, Mexico, or Costa Rica is valid Tuesdays - Fridays
    • Travel to/from all other cities is valid Mondays - Thursdays

Although week dates are somewhat restrictive, the BOGO promo pretty much covers every destination that Alaska Air flies to, including Hawaii, Mexico, and Costa Rica, with Prudhoe Bay (SCC) in Alaska being the only exception.  Solo and first class travelers will only get 10% off, though there's no restrictions whatsoever for them.


Alaska Air had a pretty creative COVID-19 safety video that aired as a commercial during Super Bowl LV yesterday.  Instead of focusing on in-flight safety such as seatbelts, life vests, and safety placards, the commercial was about masking up and the steps that the carrier has been taking to combat the in-flight spread of COVID-19.  This is not surprising as during my recent experience flying on Southwest, the flight attendants appeared to be more focused on enforcing the mandatory properly-worn mask policy instead of seatbelts.


Stack with 10% off Chase Offer or 10% off Alaska Air gift cards at Costco

Chase also has a targeted offer for 10% cashback on Alaska Air bookings made through February 17, 2021.  The airfare purchase must be $50+, until a maximum of $31 in cashback is reached ($310 in purchases).  If you weren't targeted for the Chase Offer, Costco is also selling Alaska Air gift cards for 10% off to their members, though $500 in gift card purchases is required for a total of $449.99.  And if you've got a big enough flight purchase for let's say 6 passengers roundtrip to Hawaii, you could potentially use your Chase Offer for up to $310 and cover the rest with Costco's discounted Alaska Air gift cards.  The advantage of charging the flights to the Chase Offer is that you'd be covered with Chase's travel protection benefits.



Quick thoughts

If you're planning on flying anytime soon with a companion or your family, today would be a good time to book with Alaska Air.  I don't anticipate all age groups would be fully vaccinated by May 26, but for those of you with vacations in mind or urgent business trips, this could be a good opportunity for you to save 50% on flights.  Must book by today!

In a surprise move, Citi has added American Airlines as a transfer partner for their ThankYou Points (TYP) earning credit cards.  What's especially intriguing is that even no annual fee cards that normally don't offer transfers to loyalty programs are eligible for this new and temporary partnership, albeit at a lower transfer ratio.  Citi's premium line of cards, including the Prestige and the Premier, both have 1:1 transfer capability with AAdvantage miles (1,000 TYP = 1,000 AAdvantage miles).  Whereas no annual fee cards, including the ThankYou Preferred and the Rewards+, get a 2:1 transfer ratio (1,000 TYP = 500 AAdvantage miles).  This transfer partnership is valid from July 18 through November 13, though one could speculate that it could be extended. Park Hyatt Sydney review

For our trip to Australia's east coast, we started off with a 4-night stay in Sydney.  We decided to stay at the Park Hyatt Sydney as it has been consistently rated as one of the best Hyatt luxury properties worldwide.  The hotel, located in the heart of Sydney Harbor at the Rocks, is famous for its stunning views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Price As a category 8 hotel, the Park Hyatt Sydney is Hyatt's most expensive award category ranging from 35k-45k points per night.  Fortunately, since we were traveling during Australia's "slower" winter season, we were able to get off-peak rates of 35k for most of our nights in a standard 1 King Bed room.
