American Airlines offering 2X miles on summer flights

As the airline industry slowly begins their ascent to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, American Airlines is offering 2X miles for summer flights in an effort to get people to fly again.  All flights booked by June 30 and flown by September 30, 2020 are all eligible for double award miles.  The flights need to be marketed and operated by AA, so partner, codeshare, and Oneworld flights won't qualify.  You also need to first register for the promo before booking.

AA's current COVID-19 travel waiver applies to all flights booked by June 30 for travel through September 30, 2020, so all flights booked as a part of this promo can be changed or cancelled without a penalty.  AA is "continuing to limit the number of customers on" their flights, which includes reassigning "seats to create more space between customers or to accommodate families who need to be seated together."  However, flights can still be full as they're not plain outright capping the number of seats sold like Delta has at 60%.

It should be noted that this promo is capped at 10,000 total award bonus miles.  The full terms and conditions are as follows:
  • This offer is available to all AAdvantage® members
  • You must register by 11:59 p.m. CT on June 30, 2020, and before flight purchase and travel in order for your flights to count toward this promotion
  • Eligible flights must be both marketed by American Airlines and operated by American or American Eagle®, booked in any published, purchased fare, and ticketed by June 30, 2020
  • Flights booked with miles as the form of payment are not eligible for this promotion
  • Travel booked or cancelled/re-booked after June 30, 2020, isn’t eligible to earn bonus miles
  • You can make changes to your travel under the original booking (record locator) after June 30, 2020 and remain eligible for this promotion
  • All eligible flights must be flown between June 1, 2020, and September 30, 2020
  • Flights marketed and/or operated by other codeshare partners aren’t eligible
  • You’ll earn double bonus award miles for each eligible flight once it posts to your account
  • You can earn up to 10,000 total bonus award miles for this promotion
  • Bonus miles don’t count toward elite status qualification or AAdvantage® Million MilerSM status
  • Miles are subject to the standard AAdvantage® program terms and conditions
  • American may, at any time and without notice, change, stop or end this promotion in part or in full

Bottom line

The travel industry is slowly starting to get back on its feet as yesterday, TSA screened a total of 441,255 passengers, which is the highest number since the pandemic begin on March 22.  However, that's still a far cry compared to previous year's figure of 2,669,860.  Airlines are definitely doing anything they can do get people to fly again, whether it be safety and social distancing measures or promos like 2X award miles.  If you plan on taking advantage of AA's solid 2X summer promo, remember to first register your AAdvantage account before booking.
